Uxella League Division 1 - Victoria Park

Maltshovel Sports 2 (0) Red Tile FC 1 (0)

Red Tile will now have to hope Woolavington slip up on the final day if the Cossington based team are to become Uxella League Champions. Tile crucially let a 1 goal lead slip due to 2 disputed penalties that handed Maltshovel all 3 points.

Tile took the lead thanks to James Hamilton who was on hand to convert Shane Thompson’s cross, but a disputed handball from Simon Bone saw Maltshovel draw level and then a blatant dive was rewarded with a second spot kick that was duly converted. It was hard luck on Tile who looked leggy after a close and epic win over Champions Woolavington some 36 hours earlier.

Neil Thompson and Rich Ball were both forced off in the opening 20 minutes as the games seem to catch up with the team. Whilst the penalties were the major talking point, Tile once again failed to convert their chances.

They must now beat Railway Club in their final game and hope Tiger Old Boys beat Woolavington. If so Tile will win the league by 1 point precious point.

Uxella League Division 1 - Woolavington

Woolavington 0 (0) Red Tile FC 1 (1)

Red Tile got a massive step towards the Uxella League Division 1 title after a superb performance against reigning champions Woolavington. Having played only 48 hours previously Andy Staunton was able to welcome back Damon Jennings who had missed the previous two games due to a hamstring strain. Rich Ball was moved to right back and Steve Hall to right midfield as James Hamilton returned to the starting line up.

Tile knew what they had to do and set about their task from the first whistle.  They hassled and harried Woolavington in every area, limiting their time on the ball and making life difficult for the champions.  With pace in abundance Tile had the better of the opening exchanges. Their reward came from James Hamilton. Receiving the ball on the edge of the area Hamilton flicked the ball over his marker and volleyed the ball into the back of the net to give Tile a deserved 1-0 lead. Woolavington were visibley shaken and started to throw themselves in to challenges, but Tile were too quick and too savvy.

Tiles momentum was stalled however has Damon Jennings was forced off. His replacement Scott Capel immediately got stuck into the action and within 10  minutes of coming on received a yellow card.  It did nothing to diminsh his game as Capel continued to hassle the Woolavington midfield. Tile  were looking comfortable especially at the back with Adam Evans leading by example and Simon Bone remiaining solid and composed, backed up by Rich Ball and Neil Thompson they looked steadfast.

Woolavington failed to create a decent goalscoring opportunity with Tile keeper Chris Wilcox equal to anything that was thrown at him. At half time Andy Staunton asked for more the same. He duly got it.  Woolavington, as expected stepped up their game in the second period, but came up against a stubborn back line. Commitment was the key and everyone in a green shirt duly gave to the cause.

The defence withstood heavy pressure, throwing themselves in to every challenge, blocking shots and winning important headers. Andy Staunton brought himself on for James Hamilton as Tile looked to freshen things up. With Woolavington on the front foot Tile began to play on the break. Steve Hall produced a series of excellent runs that put Woolavington on the back foot, Hall was unlucky to not score as he saw two efforts go close. Shane Thompson produced Tiles best effort hitting the bar amongst a sea of players.  But it was at the back that Tile really excelled and everytime Woolavington went forward the door was well and truely shut.

At the end of the game Tile had produced a stunning  display that further underlines their creditials as potential champions, however the hard work will continue on sunday as Tile play their game in hand over Woolavington, away against 3rd place Maltshovel. Should Tile emerge victorious they will lead by 1 point going into the final game against Railway Club.

This display was full of character, determination and guts but it will count for nothing if Tile don’t get the points against Maltshovel.

Flag Old Boys 2 (1) Red Tile FC 5 (3)

Red Tile bounced back from sundays cup final defeat with a routine win Flag Old Boys. In doing so Tile closed the gap to 5 points between them and table topping Woolavington.

Tile looked comfortable throughout and never really needed to engage a higher gear. Steve Hall opened the scoring reacting quickest to a parried shot to fire home and then Shane Thompson nodded in a long throw to double the advantage. Adam Wall made up for missing a penalty on sunday by coolly slotting Tile into a 3-0 lead before a suberb solo effort from Andy Smith made it 4. Smith nutmegged is made on the half way line before charging past two Flag defenders and then tucking the ball away past the keeper.  Flag got themselves a goal just before the break thanks to a penalty of their own but Tile were looking easy going into half time.

Flag pulled back a second but the game was made safe midway through the 2nd half. Andy Staunton replaced Shane Thompson immediately got into the action. James Hamilton, who replaced Adam Wall, swung over a great cross to the back post where Tiles Player manager headed in for 5-2.

In the head it was the perfect game for Tile. A decent performance, another 3 points, but crucially an easy run out ahead of the crunch games against Woolavington (Friday) and 3rd place Maltshovel (sunday). The result also saw Tile overtake their pervious best points tally and  now means Tile are well placed to overtake top spot.

Dave Hobbs Cup Final -

Bridgwater Wanderers 5 (3) Red Tile 2 (0)

Red Tile will be hoping that defeat in the Dave Hobbs Cup Final on sunday will not derail their title ambitions.  Tile simply didn’t convert their chances as they splipped to a 5-2 defeat.  It was a scoreline that didn’t reflect the true nature of the game, Tile had 7 or 8 clear cut chances on top of Neil Thompson hitting the bar and Adam Wall missing a penalty, but could do nothing as Wanderers converted theirs.

Despite the defeat Tile remain positive with all energies being centred on snatching the title away from champions Woolavington.  The mood in the Tile squad remains upbeat and positive, with a sense that losing in the final is only going to make the squad stronger and more determined to win the league.

However becoming champions for the first time in the clubs history will not be easy. Tile will face 3 games in 6 days which will test their resolve and their strength in depth.

For long periods on Sunday Tile looked the better side but lacked the final ball and the crucial finish to really take advantage. Andy Staunton now knows the next 10 days are crucial for Tile. The question is has sunday added fuel to the fire for Tile’s title challenge.

Red Tile FC 2 (2) Quantock Pride 1 (0)

Red Tile produced a display full of character, grit and determination to apply pressure to league leaders Woolavington.  Manager Andy Staunton had a full squad to choose from and with the Dave Hobbs Cup Final only 5 days away decided to field a strong side.

Tile started brightly with a confident and assured passing game  that Quantock couldn’t live with. Defensively Tile looked solid as they looked to take advantage of their good start.

With clever movement  Tile were causing problems everytime they went forward. When Shane Thompson was upended 30 yards out Tile were given an opportunity to take advantage. Olly Smith duely stepped up and fired a blistering shot into the top corner which left the keeper with no chance. Andy Smith  went close and James Hamilton saw a super effort fly just over before Steve Hall doubled the lead. Picking up a loose ball some 35 yards out, Hall drove at the defence, with Quantock backing off Hall used the space to rifle a shot into the top corner.

Damon Jennings gave Staunton a moment of concern as he limped off with a hamstring injury, Jennings will be hopefully fit to play in the final however the injury was sufficient enough to force a change which saw Rich Ball come on.

Tile looked good value for there lead but at Half time the call was for concentration and more of the same.  Within 10 minutes of the second half Quantock were back in the game after Simon Bone upended a Pride player in the area, the referee duly awarded a penalty which was converted to make it 2-1. Tile then had their own claim for a penalty after Andy Smiths cross seemed to hit the hand of the Quantock Pride defender, the referee waved away the appeals.

Rich Ball then had a goal disallowed for offside after clever movement left the Quantock Pride defence and linesman confused. After consulting the linesman the referee disallowed the goal. Pride certainly rallied in the second half but the Tile defence stood firm despite a couple of close calls. With minutes remaining Quantock had probably there best chnace from open play but they were to be denied by a great reflex save from Chris Warner who then did enough to put off the attacker and see the ball go behind for a goal kick.

Tile towards the end were defending manfully and closing down and working hard in defensive areas. Tile fully deserved the 3 points for sheer hard work and determination and will be hoping for a similar display in the remaining 5 fixtures of the season, starting with the cup final on sunday.

Uxella League Division 1 - Cossington

Red Tile FC 3 (0) Bridgwater Wanderers 3 (2)

Red Tile fell 5 points behind leaders Wolavington having salvaged a draw at home to Bridgwater Wanderers on proved to be an uncomfortable afternoon for the Cossington based side. Without key personnel and players struggling with knocks and injuries Andy Staunton’s resources were fully stretched.  Neil Thompson came through a late fitness test, but with Damon Jennings, Shane Thompson and Adam Wall all suffering from knocks and without Olly Smith, Rich Ball, Adam Chappell and Simon Bone Tile were left with a bear minimum. The result saw Scott Capel start in centre midfield and a recall for Shaun Turner at the back in place of Bone.

In a twist to the schedules, the game kicked off at 1430 and with a warm easter sunday sun the players soon felt the affect. Neither team could really establish a rhythm in the early exchanges as Tile looked to play football and Wanderers looking for the searching wide ball.  10 minutes in Tile were dealt a huge blow when Damon Jennings was forced off with a hamstring injury. Liam Evans was his replacement as Adam Evans was pushed into midfield to plug the gap.

Wanderers made the first meaningful contribution to the game and found themselves 1 up as Tile were undone by a long ball. It was 2 soon after as a long ball combined with woeful marking allowed Wanderers to double their lead. Tile weren’t producing the kind of chances they have been used to this season their best effort of the first half came from a James Hamilton free kick that the keeper fumbled. It wasn’t until the second half that Tile finally started looking like the attacking force they can be. James Hamilton, Scott Capel and Andy Smith all saw efforts go close and with the Wanderers keeper unable to hold anything that came near him Tile looked to captalise.

James Hamilton then raced cleared and lashed a ferocious shot past the keeper to reduce the lead and give Tile a way back into the game. They were level minutes later, Tile won free kick 20 yards out and James Hamilton drove it low and hard through the wall, the keeper got a decent hand on it but with his seemingly Teflon gloves somehow managed to help the ball over the line.

Tile looked like snatching all three points as Wanderers began to panic,  but Tile were to be out done by a dubious looking goal. Another long ball was lashed forward towards the Wanderers forward, who seemed to standing offside, as he went for the ball Adam Evans managed to get back and cover only for the forward to leave the ball for a team mate to run onto and fire home. After consultation with the linesman, who had flagged for offside, the referee gave the goal and Wanderers were back in front.

Andy Staunton was then caught late on the edge of the area presenting Hamilton with another free kick however this time the keeper, depite yet another fumble was able to divert the ball away from danger. The challenge on Staunton forced him off and saw Adam Wall come on for the final few minutes. The sub, with a heavily strapped ankle, made an immediate impact , picking up a loose ball 25 yards out Wall unleashed an unstaoppable effort to grab a hard fought point for Tile.

Red Tile and Bidgwater Wanderers will now meet again in the Dave Hobbs cup final on the  26th of April.

Uxella League Division 1 - BCL

Tiger Old Boys 5 (2) Red Tile FC 2 (2)

A critical weekend in the Uxella League saw both Red Tile and leaders Woolavington slip up, and has left the league as wide open as it ever has been. Tile did little to suggest that they are capable of overtaking Woolavington, showing brief glimpses of the form that had seen them go undefeated in the league for 5 months.  On what proved to be a fraustrating and at times fraut performance Tile were punished for not taking their chances and guilty of gifting their opponents cheap goals.

They fell behind to a wonder strike however James Hamilton equalised from 8 yards, after good work from Shane Thompson had created an opportunity for Andy Staunton. Tile looked the better of the two sides with Andy Smith creating endless problems on the Tile right and Damon Jennings and Adam Wall working tirelessly in the centre of the midfield.  But for all their possession Tile couldn’t find a way through. They found themselves 2-1 down when a routine clearance was charged down and the Tigers forward was able to run the ball into the empty net.  Tile responded almost immediately when Andy Smith was upended in the penalty area. Hamilton stepped and despite a hand from the goalkeeper fired Tile level.

With the scores level Tile looked to push on and secure another three points however they were soon on the back foot. Tigers were left fuming as Tile cleared an effort off the line, Tigers appealed but the referee waved away their appeals. With injustice running high Tigers were then reduced to 10 men. It did little to nullify Tigers threat. Tigers were awarded a penalty of their own, but the result saw the effort go wide.  The miss should of given Tile the boost they needed but they couldn’t respond and Tigers stretched into a comfortable 5-2 lead.

At times Tile lacked the energy and the bite required to kick on. With Tigers down to 10 men you wouldn’t of known it. Tile were simply over run by a team with one less player. They lacked  effort to close players down, with the Tigers back line hardly being pressed and Tile allowing free headers and players too much time on the ball.  It was a dissapointing display in which no can point the finger at what went wrong. Tile simply had an off game, luckily Woolavington did too, but then again with the two results Tile could done with 3 points.

Uxella League Division 1 - Cossington

Red Tile FC 9 (5) Maxwells 1 (1)

Red Tile returned to league action in emphatic style with a crushing 9-1 victory against struggling Maxwells. With game switched to  Cossington Tile had the ideal opportunity to keep the pressure on leaders Woolavington. Andy Staunton had injury worries before the game with both Shaun Turner (thigh) and Rich Ball (Toe) struggling  and Neil Thompson (ankle) ruled out for 4 weeks, he was also without Chris Warner so Adrian Facey made a return to the starting line up.  Despite the injuries Adam Chappell was handed a start in place of James Hamilton and Liam Evans replaced Steve Hall, who moved across to left full back.

In the reverse fixture back in october Tile swept Maxwells aside with a comfortable 9-1 victory and they were soon on their way inside the opening 2 minutes. Andy Smith surged forward in behind his marker and coolly slotted home. Tile were soon 2-0 up as Shane Thompson latched on to a ball in the area after it had been fumbled by the keeper.

Player manager Andy Staunton then justified his own selection. Running onto a through ball Staunton rolled the ball past the helpless keeper. Chappell could of and should of added to the tally but couldn’t finish from promising areas. Staunton then added a fourth smartly chipping the keeper from 16 yards out.

Maxwells rallied and pulled one back from a flukey free kick. But it did little to stop Tile. Adam Wall was his industrious self and his superb throughball cut the Maxwells defence in two and found Shane Thompson who ran in and smashed the ball past the helpless keeper to make it 5-1 at Half time.

With the game safe and Maxwells offering little in the way of attacking threat, Staunton made 3 changes with Hamilton, Ball and Capel replacing Smith, Thompson and Jennings.

Within 5 minutes of the restart Capel drove home to make it 6 -1.  Andy Staunton grabbed his hattrick to make it 7-1 before Capel added an 8th and his second.  A 9th followed as Staunton Volleyed home from an acute angle to bag his 4th goal of  the season and take his overall tally to 10 for the season.

Tile are keeping pace with leaders Woolavington and lie 3 points behind with a game in hand.  With Woolavington still to play Tile can ill afford any slip ups but with an unbeaten league run that now stratches back to october and a squad high on confidence Tile are poised to makesure Woolavington will have a challenge right to the last game of the season.
